How do you handle dark matter?

Our team has some work items that come up during the sprint that we spend time on, but weren't things we originally planned on or committed to doing.  We're wondering whether or not it makes sense to add items to the scrum dashboard in these scenarios?  On one hand, it shows work that the team completed, but on the other hand if we start working on something but don't finish it, it looks bad even though it wasn't an official commitment.

Thoughts?
